Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella’s Marescialla fragrance is a bouquet of spicy, woody oriental notes. The exclusive formula dates back to the 1800s and has spicy top notes of mace, and aromatic middle and base notes of dry woods. The original formula was created for a fragrant powder by Countess D’Aumont, the wife of a French marshall, who used it to perfume her gloves. It is said that her interest in alchemy aroused suspicion of witchcraft and that she was burnt at the stake. The “bouquet à la Maréchale” was in vogue at the end of the 1800s. In Tomasi di Lampedusa’s literary masterpiece Il Gattopardo, Angelica wore this perfume at the ball in Salina, where “the fragrance of the bouquet à la Maréchale arose from Angelica’s neckline...”

Fragrance Notes: Woody oriental

Top: citrus, mace

Beautifully old-fashioned

This is the sort of camphoraceous woody scent that just doesn’t get produced nowadays - it is absolutely gorgeous. The opening is very strong terebinth/turpentine and citrus, has a real nineteenth-century vibe to me (quite medicinal), but then it becomes all woods and moss. Not a blind buy but if you like old-fashioned scents and/or woods and moss, it is unmissable!

Dark, herbal and mysterious

The true beauty of this fragrance is in the dry down, you’re left enchanted like a wizard has tapped you with a magic wand or a priestess has enveloped you in spells from a magic book found deep in the forest. Very unique scent, not for the feint of heart, do not blind buy if you are not adventurous
